When getting started with online marketing, here are three of my favorite strategies for book promotion (or Web site marketing in general!):
1. Get a blog up and running. Blogs are a quick and easy way to get Web exposure. For best search engine optimization, be sure to post entries at least three times per week. Blog entries do not need to be long. Short, quick tips are perfect for short attention spans online. You can also submit your blog to directories for extra exposure. I have compiled some resources for this on my site: http://www.businessinfoguide.com/blog-resources.htm
2. One of my favorite strategies is to participate in Internet radio interviews, podcasts and webinars. These opportunities are abundant and I’ve found that they can be better than traditional radio because users tend to be at their computers (primed and ready to buy books!), interviews last 30 mins to an hour compared to 5 or 10 minutes on traditional radio, and the interviews often are archived online for a really long time (added exposure). Many podcasts are also being posted to iTunes now. Ideally you should search for programs that reach your target audience and then send them a pitch—they all need interesting guests. You can search sites like www.blogtalkradio.com, www.wsradio.com and www.voiceamerica.com. Also be sure to Google keyword combinations such as “teleseminar writers” or “radio authors” and things like that.
3. Publish informational articles on sites like www.ideamarketers.com and www.ezinearticles.com. These are content portals where users look for articles to publish on their websites and in their newsletters. In order to publish your article, they must include your author bio and Web link. Your articles will eventually show up in all kinds of places. Also, be on the lookout for other Web sites and blogs that accept article submissions. I make it a regular practice of writing one or two articles each month and have my assistant post them to dozens of Web sites. We also submit them to smaller print publications like trade association newsletters and business journals. This has proven very effective over the years.
